I’ve never killed one. Only had it when King Ranch used to cook it for me about 10 years ago. shite it might be 13 years ago now that I think about it.

WAY better to eat than whitetail. I miss my days in the Hill Country whacking 1-2 every year. I shot enough over the years to have several pieces of furniture recovered in Axis hides.

Yep. Steak everything you can, grind the rest 100%, no beef fat, no bacon, just axis.

That'd be pretty cool. I know nothing of hides, but I'm guessing you had to tan them or something or did you bring it to someone?

Would love to work out an axis deer doe hunt with you if they’re consistently on your place. I’d like the meat and hides.

Back then, (20 years ago) almost all taxidermists used one place in the Midwest to tan hides, The cost at the time was $40 and they mailed them directly back to me. The best thing is that, unlike tanned whitetail hides, Axis doesn’t lose hair over time, and it’s also noticeably softer. I’ll post some pictures later when I get home. I started out having the ranch manager’s wife make me a pillow, before I was done, two of my Grannie’s antique chairs and my Grandpa’s footstool got recovered (here in BR). I think they came out great.

One of these years when I get around to creating my hidden bourbon room I’ll make a rug like above.

I've seen some behind a high fence on Hwy 190 and at a place in Rayne, LA.

Man. That looks fine! Lmk, I’ll bring the bourbon.

I still have 2-3 full hides left, it would be cool to have something like that made.

Take a weekend and go shoot a good buck and a doe. They breed twice a year so you will not hurt the population. First you will notice the girth difference from the Texas whitetails. Much harder to load into a truck or UTV!!

Skin them out and keep the hides. As others have mentioned and showed, they are beautiful to decorate with.

Then take your time and get all the meat. I think the skirt steaks and rib roll on these are even worth eating and I throw all that out on whitetail.
