Will be going at the end of the summer. Either flying into Amsterdam and out of Munich or vice versa. Plan on traveling the western side of Germany. Anything that is a must do or any advice on the travel itself?

Not against trains but might rent if it makes more sense, like going to neuchwenstein. Want to do a soccer match but other than pretty open. Definitely want to do Bastogne/Foy but when enjoy hiking and nature. I’m more of a history buff but I can also sit in a pub all day.

I am going on a Rhine and Danube River cruise in April and will probably be able to give you a better answer after that.
I have been to Munich which is a wonderful city to visit. We went through the Black Forest to Heidelburg and then to Frankfurt from where we flew home.
We had a great time, but those places were not at the top of my list of European vacation destinations.

FYI, just finished the Danube Waltz Cruise (Budapest to Passau) on Viking. Happy to share any info needed.
In terms of OP's question...
We later spent a week in Munich. Day tripped to Rothenburg and Neuschwanstein Castle, which is a must do in my book.
We stayed at the Hotel An der Oper in Munich. Would highly recommend it. Literally 5 minutes to the Hofbräuhaus Beer Hall.

European soccer leagues are generally August through Aprilish FYI. They are usually off for the most part for Summer.
You can probably do a tour of a soccer stadium, PSG in Paris had a really nice organized tour for example. I'd assume the bigger clubs do like Bayern Munich.
I can't recommend the alps any more in that area outside of Munich. So many fantastic places and sites to see.
I'd definitely rent a car. If you have more than 2 people it'll be close to a wash with train tickets anyway, but you'll have much more flexibility outside of the town centers. Driving in those countries are a piece of cake, you'll actually love Germany they are much more organized drivers than the USA. Very very few slow lane drivers there.

Bavaria is wonderful (to me). The Zugspitze (the highest mountain in Germany) is about 1.25 hours drive south of Munich near Garmisch-Partenkirchen (1936 Winter Olympics site). The summit is accessible by railway/ lift.
Heading down from Munich Ludwig II hunting palace Linderhof Palace Website Link is on the way there.

That will be an amazing trip!
We did the Amsterdam to Basel cruise in 2023. My thoughts would be to first spend a few days in Amsterdam. Definitely take a canal tour. Highlight of our time there. Go to the Rijksmuseum. We did a day trip to visit the Zaanse Schan to see the village and windmills. LINK
Just got back from our Danube Waltz that started in Budapest. We spent 3 days there. My second favorite city (next to Prague). Defitinely go visit the Hospital In The Rock. Take a 20 minute cab ride out to Memento Park to see the Soviet era statues they moved out there. Really interesting.

It looks like we’ll be going around Labor Day so we should be able to catch a Bayern Munich match.
BIL lives is Kaiserslautern and has a car, just not sure what parts of the trip he’ll be able to take leave for.
But it sounds like Munich and Amsterdam are the main spots which should make for good bookends.

I live in Amsterdam and lived briefly in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in Alpine Bavaria (and relatively close to München) so happy to provide recs for those areas.
As for routing, it seems by “Central Europe” your intention is to travel around the Netherlands and (Western) Germany in which case I suggest:
Amsterdam > Maastricht > Cologne > Heidelberg > Freiburg (Black Forest area) > Garmisch-Partenkirchen (+Neuschwanstein Castle in nearby Füßen) > München
If you have time to spare maybe throw Bamberg or Rothenburg in there for good measure

Thanks.
We arrive in Amsterdam the same day the boat leaves. I am hoping that we can at least do a little sightseeing.
Instead of taking the pre trip extension to Amsterdam we are taking the post trip extension to Prague.
