I thought it was an alright movie. I do have a fear of worms though so I don’t think I can ever watch that movie again

Loved most of it. Hated the end.

These were my thoughts on it last year:
quote:

This is about where I am on it. It was a very cool premise, and some of it was executed pretty well. But yeah the ending borderline sucked arse and got a little too jumbled for my liking. And I'm not sure there's ever been a more foreshadowed thing in movies than when Jack sets the dagger down on the little table between him and Lilly.

That being said, I did kinda like it though. And I thought the concept of it and the way it was shot was really cool. Definitely would recommend it to fans of the genre, but I'd caution to go in with a fairly low bar.

I thought the idea and execution were pretty cool, but they dropped the ball BIG TIME with the ending. And the whole Grove angle and him sacrificing his wife for success felt unnecessary and out of place.

If they could've nailed the landing, I would have loved it and ranked it pretty high.

And you're 100% correct

Not nailing the ending is an epidemic with modern horror

Again, correct. Convoluted plots/endings are an epidemic in modern movies, generally.

Especially supernatural/religious horror.

See The Devil Inside for evidence of that. Great movie until the last five minutes, and the shite ending ruins the movie.

I feel the same way you do about it. I loved the first 95% of the movie and thought the lead actor was outstanding and absolutely nailed the role. The ending kind of went sideways but I still enjoyed the movie overall.

It was better than what I was expecting. I had really low expectations though.

People try to make movies mean something larger and more profound when playing it straight would result in a better end product.

What sucks about this in horror is that leaving certain ends open amplifies the horror aspect of it. Trying to tie it up into a bow is what we expect out of basic bitch stuff.

The other issue with horror, especially modern horror, is trying to make it too symbolic/allegorical. Once "prestige horror" started, lots of the smaller output studios started copying this. SOMEtimes, horror works perfectly with allegory. SOMEtimes (often, is probably better), playing it straight is better.
