The Braves finally have their ace.
They’ve agreed to terms with veteran pitcher Derek Lowe on a four-year, $60 million contract, a person familiar with negotiations said this morning. The deal will be finalized after Lowe takes a physical Wednesday.

I can feel the power shift in the NL East from here, thank God the mets got Tim Redding or we could call this division now.

Lowe's not really an ace. He's getting old now and doesn't ever strike anybody out.

groundball pitcher with a pretty good infield behind him, I'll take it

They overpaid for him, but they had to. And they didn't get fleeced by a team for a bunch of prospects. The rotation reconstruction is complete.
Rotation is solid. Here's how it looks:
Derek Lowe
Javier Vazquez
Jair Jurrjens
Kenshin Kawakami
5th starter - some combo of Glavine, Charlie Morton, Tommy Hanson, JoJo Reyes. My money is on Hanson.
Now, if they can acquire a bat for left field....

2 birds with 1 stone, they keep him away from the mets and they obviously upgrade their rotation. Wren said in an interview yesterday that he also has some good looking trades sitting on his desk for another SP
Also, look for Dunn to sign as well as Andruw

I can see the Dunn thing happening if it's for about $8 million per on a two-year deal, similar to what Pat The Bat got in Tampa.
I know losing Smoltz stings from a sentimental standpoint, but the Braves got two pitchers this offseason in Lowe and Vazquez who throw 200 innings every year, when not one Atlanta starter threw as many last season. The trickle down effect of the rotation overall with regards to how it will benefit the bullpen is huge.

Fred, you like the way things are looking? You think they re-sign Ohman?

Well that would be a huge steal at that price.

Yeah, I really do. They still will probably be picked to finish third behind the Phillies and Mets, which is just where I want to be. After a 2008 filled with bad karma, you have to like the makeup of this team and think they'll be better.
I think they need to resign Ohman, but I just don't see it happening. They got Logan in the trade with Chicago, and signed another lefty named O'Flaherty, so it looks like they're going the cheap route with lefty relievers again.
I would be content to sign Ohman and go to spring training with what we have offensively. Let Schafer and Brandon Jones try to play their way into the outfield, and if you need to trade for a bat you can probably find one.
