Hey all, I'm taking the family to Townsend for the New Year and our rental backs up to a river/stream (not sure which one).

I was hoping to do some fishing and was wondering if anyone here has fished that region and what lures/techniques are the best.

My plan is to bring some light tackle and fish with lures I see on some youtubers in North AL. Ned rigs, helgramites, small curly tail grubs.

Anything else I should consider?

Good indication of what you’ll be dealing with. Good luck.

The stream where he's staying won't look anything like that river in the video.

The river we back up to is called the little river. Finally got the address, don't know if that makes a difference or not.

I think it’s the Little Pigeon River. I’ve never fished around Townsend but have fished going out of Townsend towards Cades Cove. I normally only fish the West Prong around Gatlinburg and between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge though and have never fished there this time of year. You’ll have a blast whether you catch anything or not. Or I should say I do because it’s so much different than fishing lakes/rivers here. It’ll be up close and personal.

Only two tips I can give you because I suck at fly fishing apparently is talk to the fly fishing shops. They’ll tell you better areas and what flies/baits are producing. And, get as far off the beaten path as you can. Easily accessible water gets fished hard the times I’m there.

Definitely have a jar of pink salmon eggs, #12 hooks, various weights and 4 lb monofilament or something thin and invisible. Basic chicken rig fished on the bottom will catch rainbows. Adjust weight as needed to deal with current. Good luck!

Thanks guys. Yeah I probably don't have the right gear for what's in this river, but I'll still try.

Who knows, maybe I'll figure it out and be able to release a different type of video.

Appreciate y'all. Merry Christmas.

Stop in at Little River Outfitters in Townsend. They’ll hook you up. TWRA stocks trout all year round but most of the area is catch and release only during the winter

Love the area. Grew up very close to there. Just be sure to leave Townsend the way you found it.

We don’t want Pigeon Forge part II.

This. They'll give you some good information on where to go, techniques, etc within whatever parameters you give them. If you do plan to fish/hike in GSMNP keep in mind that you now have to purchase a permit to park in one spot longer than 15 minutes.

Little River is stocked...they've finished up for the year (will resume in February) but there are plenty of holdovers. If you want to get into fly fishing it's not that tricky to pick up. I've been on a couple of trips with Rob Fightmaster (guide) and all have been very enjoyable.

Fished in the rivers/streams up there all the time when on vaca. All ya need is ultra light and spinners. Small ones.. and have some fun. No treble hooks. Make sure you go and tell them where all you plan to fish, license are weird and confusing.
