Houston is set to hire Florida's Austin Armstrong as its next defensive coordinator, sources told ESPN.

Armstrong has informed the Florida staff that he will accept the Houston job, according to a source. He would replace Shiel Wood, who left earlier this month after one season at Houston and two under coach Willie Fritz to take the defensive coordinator job at Texas Tech.

An Alabama native, Armstrong spent the past two seasons at Florida after two years as Southern Miss' defensive coordinator. After a bumpy start to the season, Florida's defense surrendered 17 points or fewer in the team's final three games, as the Gators beat LSU, Ole Miss and Florida State to finish the regular season at 7-5.

Armstrong had been sharing defensive coordinator duties at Florida with veteran Ron Roberts, who also serves as executive head coach and has coordinator experience from Auburn, Baylor and other stops. Florida is set to face Tulane on Dec. 20 in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl.

Can’t imagine playing football for a guy that looks like him or Drinkwitz.

He does look just like him.

I don't think he liked Napier bringing in Ron roberts.

He will run the defense in houston.

We're very very multiple. We base out of a 3-3-5, per say, but REALLY a 4-2 - cuz that’s what modern football is - we don’t have a toolbox we like to say we have a tool shed of scheme. Ya know what I mean? Our deal we’re gonna be multiple four down front team - split safety man match close coverage. Uh we’re gonna pressure- the word creeper gets thrown around right - which is a 4 man pressure against the pass and a 5 man pressure against a the run so it’s is a mixture of a fire zone and a coverage concepts. I mean we do some other stuff On a 5 man process that’s different on a 4 down front and a 3 down front - at the end of the day - not many people are like us that are multiple in the backend and multiple in the front end. They’re kind of one or the other. We’re both, ya know what I mean? We’re gonna take whatever tools we need every week to play in this league people every team in this league is different. Vanderbilt is different than Georgia. Georgia is different than Tennessee. Ya know what I’m sayin? Like you gotta have a scheme that’s flexible to what you’re seeing all the time but ALSO what your players can do. Like I can’t come here at say hey we’re a 4 man front middle field closed team - that’s craaaazy. You know what I’m sayin? But we have the ability to play each week they way we need to play to win - you know - for us it’s the same every week it’s just different for the opponent. You know what I’m sayin? But from a pressure standpoint we are aggressive you know what I mean which we say we try to negotiate with a hammer - right - like we’re gonna be aggressive, we’re gonna, we’re not gonna dictate the terms of engagement we’re gonna be able to run all our stuff against all circumstances of offense - uh we feel like we have a good run pressure philosophy and relative to the pass game
