As a shitty guitarist (read: bassist), can someone explain why the Peg guitar solo is revered the way that it is?
Sonically it doesn't sound too crazy, though I'm sure it is.

I never thought it was very good.

I don't think it's bad by any means, but compared to some of the other musicians/lines from Steely Dan songs, it just seems average.
But again, this is coming from the rhythm section so

There's a lot going on with this solo. Keep in mind that Jay Grayson essentially winged it after hearing the song (as was custom with guitar solos for Steely Dan, where they would have a parade of top session guys get one or 2 shots at a solo and then were dismissed).
It's interesting in a lot of ways, but most notably is the almost slack-key bends and slides that make up a good bit of the solo. For example, the first bend is a double bend that unbends, bends back again, slides up from the 8-7 to 12-12 (meaning that one finger slides 5 positions while one finger slides 4), then one finger in that 12 position bends 3/4 of a note.
While it's a hard solo to play, it nails the swing like feel of the song itself that makes it interesting. The slack key phrasing probably stood out amongst what were probably straightforward jazzier type solos that they had to choose from.

The thing that makes that solo so great is that it fits F&B's big picture for the song. Graydon's run feels like both the message and the mood of their lyrics.

Becker and Fagen brought in seven or eight guitarists to try the solo, and worked him for about six hours until he got it right .

Solo from 'Do It Again' is much better.
Was one of the more advanced songs to play on Guitar Hero.

They talk a good bit about this in the Yacht Rock documentary, which is very good btw.

I don't have anything to say about that solo, but that album is really good.

It's the epitome of the pretentiousness and perceived self-importance of Becker and Fagen.

And what’s so funny is in Fagan’s book, he really drives home the fact that they didn’t take themselves very seriously. He mentions that they never truly understood why legions of fans thought their music was so good. In fact, he talks about feeling quite uncomfortable around people offering praise.
All this was really disappointing to me. For example, Deacon Blues is one of my favorite songs of all time. I really felt those lyrics. So when I discovered the writing of them was done tongue in cheek, I was a little let down.

Watch Buffbraz’s link at about 4:10. I actually like some of the other ones they could have gone chosen.

One of my favorite examples of that was from a special they recorded shortly after they began touring live again. Wanna say early 90’s.
Anyway, the production crew was interviewing folks standing in line to get in to the show. They asked one girl about Steely Dan and she replied…I love Steely Dan, Year of the Cat is one of my favorite songs of all time.
The mere fact they didn’t edit that scene out told me they were probably a lot less serious than most folks believed.
