I’ve probably put 20 hours into the game, enjoying it but definitely don’t feel like I’m doing it right.
I’ve had the same sword and shield since the beginning that I’ve just upgraded a lot. Any other weapon I find isn’t as good as my sword. I’m sure it could be if i upgraded it but seems like it would take a lot of runes and smith stones to get to that point
I don’t really do any magic or anything. Im not a high enough level for most of the staffs and most of the spells I have unlocked seem kind of useless. Like the poison mist is just kind of pointless.
Maybe I’m not far enough along yet but it seems like I’m gonna use the same loadout for the entire game

You’ll get to a point where you can buy upgrade mats so I wouldn’t worry too much about running out of them. Same for runes in that later in the game you’ll have so much it won’t be an issue.
Is this your first playthrough? Just run around exploring and having fun. Don’t worry too much about your loadout right now other than what build you want to go for, but you can also respec as long as you have the items you need for it. Just don’t fat roll with your equipment load and use a weapon that matches your build and feels good to you. If it’s the long sword that feels the best to you your whole playthrough and you’re getting decent damage then so be it.

Most beginners do that and it’s perfectly fine.
Whatever works

Sword & board is perfect for beginners. Stick with it until you get upgrade mats or find a fight where you feel it's a disadvantage.

But have you checked out Elon’s build on the other thread…

It's funny you mention poison mist. I used that to cheese a couple of fights!

Too many good weapons and armor you will find along the way. Get to Palace Approach Ledge Road and you’re in the prime farming spot for the game.

Eventually he should find an intriguing Weapon Art he will want to use
