I've had a bag for about 4 years with a cost basis of $71.50 on 607 shares ($43,400). At one point in the crypto bear market, I rode this down to $8,000

This morning my bag was $250,000 and I sold 20% of my stack for $50,000 to pay off some debt. I'm up 570% from the beginning. I feel like a fool because MSTR just keeps going up. I don't want to be a hog and get slaughtered.

How do some of you experienced guys deal with the guilt of what might have been?

What's done is done. Move on. Living with any regret is wasted energy and is non-productive.

I also found that moving to a dispassionate system of investing allowed me to disconnect from whatever is going on in the market. Market goes up, I sell some. Market goes down, I buy some. Just do the math and make the trades.

Try something else and ride it too long and get slaughtered, or successfully sell it right at peak. And realize that's the way shite goes

When did you sell? I say bravo man. 250k is some serious money. And major balls to be down that big and not click the button.

I sold it this morning. I just see a lot of stuff about it's just a number on the screen until you take profits. I know in my heart that it will continue to rise but I still have 80% riding.

I've been to the bottom with it, so I don't want our lame duck prez to start a war with Russia and the market to crash without at least making my money back.

So you've profited around $7k and have 485 shares left. I wish I regretted trades like that.

Your stock is not your baby. You don’t cuddle it and pet its head.

It’s your work horse. You employed it for one purpose and it served you well.

Be happy.

Day trading/scalping/volatility trading is more fun.
If it goes up 100% over six months you double your money. But you make a whole lot more if you buy and sell all the little peaks and valleys in between. The cool thing is you can make money doing this even if it goes down 100% in 6 months

Pretty simple - would you buy $250k of MSTR if you didn’t already own it?

That is how everyone should treat their holdings. It’s the prudent and rational way to invest. No need to worry about guilt down the road if you make rational investment decisions. The guilt is only a problem when you make emotional decisions.

ETA - I think about that guy who bought 2 pizzas for 10,000 BTC back in the day. Sure it’s fun to think they’d be worth $940,000,000 today, but I’d bet that guy would have sold most/all of it well before $94,000.

Damn, still got 80%?

That's awesome. Be happy and celebrate a little today.

Correct. Not selling it at the current price is the same decision as buying it.

Right. Outside of some kind of significant tax situation that’s how all decisions should be made, and even then I’d be hesitant to make decisions solely on taxes.

Yeah, I've seen plenty of pennywise, pound foolish behavior with 1031s.

Every decision should be: what is my estimate of my forward return FROM HERE?

The OP appears to be taking the recent past and projecting it indefinitely into the future. Even if bitcoin keeps going up, is it really going to be 8X again in a reasonable time period?

Putting myself in the same position (I’m in the same position and have the same thoughts) i would feel the same way but you made a great trade and i do think taking some chips off the table is very fair. You still have skin in the game but you also de risked yourself and can use the money to improve your life. Very nice

I sold BTU after tripling my money back during the pandemic. Told myself do not sell no matter what. Had 20,000 shares at 1.26.

Yeah. I know your pain

I’m happy for you, and also, I hate you in a very cordial way.
