Asking here because it’s a bird dog and thought someone may have had experience. One of my gsp’s has badly broken her toe. We are on week 8 with it in a splint and bandages. It’s been hard since day 1 but it’s really getting bad now. The vet is saying it not healing well and amputation is a possibly. Anyone ever had a dogs toe amputated? She’s a really good bird dog that is about to start going with either myself or other people all over the country for quail season. Anyone have experience with this ? Thanks

no experience with it, but I've seen numerous dogs with three legs get around like nothing was wrong. One I know continued to duck hunt, albeit you would swear she was going to drown when retrieving. She never did though. i would imagine once healed you would never know the toe was missing.

Might sound like a dumb question.. but which toe? Is it one of the middle toes or outside? Middle toes bear pretty much all the weight so if it’s an outside toe it ain’t gonna affect them much

Dogs are resilient....doubt the dog ever notices a missing toe. Would probably never even miss a beat hunting if the surgery was done today and she was hunting tomorrow. Even in a lot of pain dogs mainly just do what dogs do.

Thirty years ago I had a hunting Lab get his “index finger” toe amputated out of a dire amount of caution when cancer was suspected. Lab results came back benign and the foot healed very easily. He never missed a step and wore his missing toe like a badge of courage. I still miss Bo.

We had a Walker come out the box one time and got his toe get caught on the cable holding the tailgate and broke it pretty badly. He still ran deer and never missed a beat.

Like the other poster said, dogs are resilient.

My last bird dog (chocolate lab) got her foot stepped on by a cow at like 5 months. Took to vet. They took her back- he came out like 30 minutes later and said they cut off the broken toe. Also told me she may never be able to run correct etc. I about lost my mind on the guy over it.

I stuck with her, she healed fine. And never slowed down. Absolutely unstoppable and the best bird dog I'll probably ever have had. 12 seasons with her before cancer took her down.

Wasn't a death sentence. And ended up better than if her whole foot had ended up messed up from the break.

Good luck OP! Hope the dog ends up OK.
