The Original Catastrophe as it's been called by historians over the years, World War I claimed the lives of roughly 9.5 million soldiers and around 7 million civilians. It saw the downfall of four great empires and the rise of the United States of America as an industrial power on the world stage. The consequences of its aftermath continue to reverberate around the globe over a century later.

It is believed that Private Henry Gunther of the U.S. 313th Infantry Regiment was the last soldier killed in the First World War. Gunther fell trying to take a German machine gun position at 10:59 AM - just one minute before the armistice was set to go into effect at 11:00. It is alleged that Gunther, who had suffered a recent demotion from the rank of sergeant, was attempting to earn his stripes back.

To be fair, plenty of Americans military personnel continued to die from the war. The American military was heavily involved in battlefield cleanup which as you can imagine was a mess. Many people died trying to cleanup those battlefields

Still are and they still take casualties.

Zone Rouge is the worst area, (maybe BR can twin cities with it?):

Would have probably lived to see the Space Age after having been born around the turn of the century.

Instead, fell to the earth as discarded grist of a ridiculous conflict.

I’ve always been fascinated by the red poppies around the Tower of London to commemorate this day.

Yeah, frick all that.

That close to the buzzer, they can keep their gun.

It always fascinated me how TPTB who signed the armistice didn’t just have it go into effect ASAP. Like they had to get another X number of hours of fighting in just to expend all the ordinance.
