When I start my truck after it sits for longer than 8 hours it makes a horrible grinding noise for a second or two then stops and engine fires right up. If it sits for a shorter period it fires up with no problem. I tried searching google and changed oil and filter with no success. Anyone have same problem or a solution.

Starter? Need new battery most probably. Is the grinding noise happening as you are trying to start it?

Yes but not every time, just does it if it sits overnight. Once it stops the engine starts.

Get battery tested and if necessary replaced. Then check starter afterwards.

If it’s not the battery, check the small wire on the starter. The terminal it bolts to is only held to the starter with cheap rivet. My terminal got loose, causing my starter to not fire at all. If I climbed under there and jiggled it, it would fire up. If you zip tie the small wire tight towards the large wire, it will keep tension on it so that the terminal stays tight and maintains contact. I have had a new starter sitting in my garage for 3 years waiting for my zip tie to fail, if you have ever changed a starter on a Coyote F150 you will understand the procrastination. Ford really fricked the shade tree mechanics with that top bolt placement.

You sure it's not the "cold start rattle" thing that so many fords have. I think it is something to do with cam phasers maybe? That may only be an issue with the ecoboost motors but it happens when they sit overnight.

Ditto on the starter replacement. I looked at it and decided I would pay someone to do it

My F150 sounded like the crankshaft was grinding on the camshaft when I tried to start it. Bad starter was all it was.

Only ecoboost is correct
