We did when we went last year. Flew into Calgary and needed one. Drove into the states to Glacier NP and then back to Banff and needed one both ways,

Yes. You leave the US for another county you need a passport. You can go to US territories (i.e. US Virgin Islands, Puerto Rice, ...) without one.

Worth driving over to Banff?
We flew into Calgary, Canada and then went on a two week road trip that was mostly in Canada. We wanted to see Glacier NP (US) and spent 4 nights there. That’s why we crossed the border twice.
There are many post on the TB about Banff with good information.

Me and my wife have passports. But the way I read it children under 16 accompanied by both parents only need a birth certificate. Am I reading this wrong? Anyone with experience? We are driving

Under 16 needs original or certified copies of birth certificates. 16 and over needs passports.

Apply for passports asap. Will take months.
If you get in a bind, call your state rep or senator to get you an appointment. They do it all of the time.

I sent my passport renewal in on 9/25/2024 with regular service, not expedited, and received it in the mail on 10/26/2024. They have gotten a whole lot better with the time amounts.
