Solid LB play Usually has been a focal part of the Tennessee defense.

Very rarely (at least in my 20 years of LSU football) has this position really been a solid part of the LSU defense. I don't remember LSU really having above average LB play since say the 2005 season when Highsmith emerged.

With Chavis background in LB's anyone not ready for this

the last time we signed a top-flight, elite linebacker was bradie james...like 10 years ago

our LB recruiting since has been piss poor

Saban's linebacking crew weren't the best in 03, but they got the job done. You are right though, it has been a weak spot in comparison to the rest of the defense.

Definitely one of the things i'm looking forward to with the "CHEIF". Better LBing.

I guess nobody remembers the Bradie James and Faulk tandem?

I was always impressed with Bradie, even when we sucked he was playing hard.

Mike Calais and Allen Stansberry were pretty solid LB's.

This was about 20 years ago but Michael Brooks was one of the best ever.

In 1989 we had 3 LBs drafted. Since then Bradie James is the only LB drafted (4th Rd, #103 overall). We were strong at lb in the 80s, but we haven't exactly been LB U since.

Very true....

Bradies James and Trev Faulk come to mind; before them was Michael Brooks and Eric Hill. Before that, you'd have to go back to the late 1960s and early 1970s with Beorge Bevan and Mike Anderson.

We'd be a much better defense with better linebacker play.

Geaux Chavis!

LB'ing is HUGE in defending modern spread offenses. The smart approach is to tailor the LB corp to fit a more cerebral and fast style of play. Sure, they need to be physical, have nose-for-the-ball instincts and be able to wrap-up tackle. That is essential stuff. But the differentiating LB corp will place a premium on the ability to know when and where to drop for pass coverage while staying abreast of the inner gap/lane assignments.

Bottom Line - smart DC's had better understand LB's or they will not survive the new brand of college football. Chavis knows LB'ing, so that is very good news for LSU.

For some reason, LSU just doesn't even seem to try to get 4-5 star linebackers which I don't understand. A monster linebacker could sign this year and walk into a starting position in the Fall on one of the nation's elite teams. Seems like that alone should recruit itself?

Other than Flynn last year we missed Ali Highsmith the most. He made plays and was always in the right position.

Kevin Minter is gonna be a hell of a LB for us. Solid guy in the middle for the next few years.
