How wide should a flower bed be?

Sorry for the very general question but just trying to get an idea.
A rectangular bed across the front of a smaller house about 40 feet long. The wife wants some Loropetalums so I would go with the smaller variety...not a hedge just some bushes. Probably throw a few other things in the mix as well.

Wider than most do, and further away from home than most put them.

12”-18” gravel maintenance strip along the house foundation and a typical bed is usually like 3’-5’. A row of shrubs will easily fill out a 3’ bed. If you go 5’ you have the option to add complementary plant materials if you want to break up a hedge row

Your termite guy will love you for this. Makes it easy for him to see and treat.

Just wide enough to be worked from both sides and fully cover the area without stepping into the flower bed.
Think of it as a raised bed like you'd use for vegetable gardening. The idea is to be able to work and harvest without stepping into the beds.

This is a great rule of thumb. Great for not getting pits from rainwater off the house if no gutters, great for bugs.
Some idiot put a 12' deep bed in this awkward spot at my house, surrounded on 3 sides by the house. It's a bitch to maintain and nothing grows from 3' in. It's an eyesore

I just did this and there’s definitly a lack of info on the internet.
I built mine 4’ deep plus a 12” rock barrier. The corners are deeper just to make it flow.
I made the rock barrier deeper in areas I needed to access like hose bibs, etc.

I’ve got a construction detail of this I’ll try to dig up.
I put a maintenance strip around all my plantings that are abutting the house slab. Up on a patio slab it isn’t necessary. You can do a 6”-12” strip if you want to for slash pad if you don’t have gutters
