Maybe because I wasn't part of his generation, but it seems like I rarely hear Marty Balin spoken about these days. A founder of seminal Jefferson Airplane and later a member of Jefferson Starship and a hit solo vocalist in his own right, Balin wrote and sang on quite a few classics including:

"Miracles"

"With Your Love"

"Count on Me"

And with that sweet, sweet '80s sound, my personal favorite:

"Hearts"

And as an added bonus, he has the notoriety of being knocked cold by a Hell's Angel at the Altamont Speedway Free Festival.

He was akways overshadowed by Grace Slick. Who wouldnt't be?

Not a big fan of either Jefferson. But "Count on Me" was a pop classic

As mentioned, I wasn't the biggest fan of that musical era, so it was a surprise to me while doing a deep dive on Balin that he wrote and performed that "Count on Me." I always had it in my had that it was a Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young song or something.

"Count on Me" is better than anything CSN ever did. Due in large part to MB.

Yes. I always loved Marty's voice and songs. And like the rest of you I'm not a real fan of The Airplane, but now listen for him in the mix when I do.

Here's one ripped from the Kafka book of obscurities.

Marty's first single as a solo in the early 60s...

Balin you out - Marty trivia:

MB was founder and co-owner of The Matrix, a legendary Frisco venue.

The Velvets recorded part of their great 1969 Live album there. Even Steel Mill, Springsteen's heavy metal band, played there c. 1970 on a rare trek west.

Nice find. Sounds like a single off a missing secret agent movie.

Another version of this song, from Altemont. Marty gets knocked out by a Hells Angel thug...

When Grace Slick becomes the voice of reason, you know things have gone terribly wrong.

Wowwww. The Worst of Jefferson Airplane is probably my favorite greatest hits ever. So many great songs. You have to like Embryonic Journey.
