Wife and I went for a long weekend. Flew into Buffalo and rented a car. Drove up through Niagara ontario and up to a smaller town called Niagara On The Lake. Stayed 3 days total over the weekend.
Niagara (US and CAN) side - Its okay. Best thing there is checking out the falls, which are amazing. Some hiking is okay, but I wouldn't plan on hanging out there for more than a few hours. SO many tourist. We didn't do the boat, but that's only because it didn't appeal to me at all.
Niagara On The Lake (NOTL) - This small town, 20 min north of Niagara, is full of BNB's some large and more corporate and some just additions to houses where you get up close and personal with the Owner. Everyone is super nice.
The town is very clean and has lots of great food and shopping. I cant tell you how many time we noticed just how full all the plants were. I need to repeat on the food. There was nothing that we had we didnt really like. I was impressed.
NOTL is also surrounded by what seems like 100 wineries. All have restaurants and tastings or bars. THey are everywhere. Its also great wine. Except the Ice wine. That's basically syrup and not tasty.
Bonus Review - NOTL is about 1:45 min from Toronto. We drove there for an afternoon and had a great time walking the city. Think clean NYC without Broadway.
I highly suggest NOTL though. I'd like to take the full family back and do more hiking in northern Ontario. Looks amazing.
Cheers.

My wife and I went to Toronto a couple years back and absolutely loved it. Like you, we walked everywhere (or took the very easy public transportation) and noticed how clean and safe everythign was. I woudl gladly go back to Toronto if given the chanc.e

Wife and I went up there about 10 years ago, and i'd pretty much say everythign you said about both Niagara and Toronto, and the wine.
You gotta do the boat though, and the tour behind the falls to hear the roar of that water falling.
Toronto is an awesome city.
As an adult, seing Niagara Falls takes half a day at most, and there's nothing else there to really do. There was a nice little toursity area to play games and what not that kids would really like to spend time at though.
