Looks like another huge chlorine plant fell “victim” to fire, this time in Georgia. We’re doomed for at least another year.
How are you guys managing the 500% price increase over the last few years?
I can usually call around and get 100# cal hypo for $250 or so. I don’t ask questions but I assume maybe there is a less than ideal condition of product or means of acquisition. That is way better than $1000 at Leslie’s but not as good as it used to be and I have no idea how to score liquid at a decent price.

I would only use cal hypo if I needed to raise my CM levels. I use liquid chlorine. I usually have it delivered a few 1 gallon jugs at a time. It was $4.63/gallon in June 2022. It is now $5.67. It sucks to see a 22.5% increase, over that time, but it still seems to be the best way for me to keep my pool looking like it does.

Better check on that...it was $7.98/gallon at Lowes yesterday for 10% chlorine.

Install a saltwater chlorine generator. It’s very efficient, effective and I only add a bag of salt about every 6 weeks to the pool. Initial investment is several hundred, maybe $1000, but it’s worth it.

Any excuse to have a price increase - that's the world we live in today.

For sure. Only way to secure a supply at this point is to stockpile or just make your own. Funny thing is SWGs seemed to be going out of style right before all of these fires started happening. Perfect storm? The US chlorine industry has completely failed the residents and industries that rely on it. There are no problems with it anywhere else in the world.

Thats where I get mine from. Always a couple bucks cheaper than Lowes.

For the OP; my 10k gallon pool in summer time takes about a quart of liquid chlorine per day.

Cal hypo will eventually jack up your chemistry. Home Depot has 3 pack gallons of liquid chlorine for about $20 after tax.

I need to bite the bullet on SWG.

That's good to know, but I haven't used liquid in a couple years. It just caught my eye as I was getting a skimmer basket.

I installed a SWG 3 years ago and it has been great. But I recommend upgrading your pump seal to extreme duty as the saltwater will eat it up and get into your motor bearings.

Good to know! I replaced my VS intelliflow bearings six months ago but the bearing store gave me the wrong seal(100 vs 1000) so I kept the old one.

How long is eventually? I’ve used Cal hypo once a week for the last two years and my pool stays perfect. I test once every few weeks and never have to add anything.

Cal in the name is calcium. It will show up as a white scale on tiles, ladders, etc. Can also mess with plumbing. If your calcium level is high draining & replacing water is really the best answer. There are other products that can be used but they cost money and the results aren't as quick. Calcium can also make the water cloudy requiring muriatic acid.

How long buildup takes is dependent on amount used and gallons of water. Do you use test strips or a test kit?

Test kit. I’ve never had any calcium buildup or cloudy water. I keep waiting on something to be wrong because it seems way too easy compared to stories I hear about pool maintenance. I add 2 to 3 lbs once a week and add a few chlorine tabs in my feeder. Literally have not added anything else in two years.

It’s not hard. However, if you’re using tabs constantly and staying clear(no CYA lockup), that means you are either replacing a lot of water manually or naturally which of course keeps calcium under 1200 or so where it would start to cause issues.

I just got my first pool put in last summer. I’ve only been shopping at Leslie‘s. I guess I need to come to realize there are other places with better prices. I just paid $250 for small little tub of shock.

The pool is in constant sun so water evaporates pretty quickly and I add more, so maybe that’s why. Thanks for the info though. I’ll definitely keep a close eye on it.
