Would love to visit there as they say it's beautiful. But really don't know where to begin planning. Any tips from you world travelers?

Spent 2 weeks there at the end of August/first of September this year. Divided time between Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Danang, Hanoi, Ha Long Bay. What questions do you have?

Was there for 4 weeks last fall. Highlights for me were Hanoi and Ha Giang

easy flight down to Hanoi from there ... I would then work my way south through the previous mentioned destinations. Grab Lonely Planet Vietnam and do some reading about each place. Old school, but I enjoy rifling through the chapters when heading to a new place as it gives me some nice background and nuanced travel tips.
It is a wonderful and affordable place to visit, so don't miss it while that close.

We did Hanoi, Sapa and Ha Long Bay cruise. Hired a driver to spend a couple of days in Sapa. Great trip and everything is cheap.
