Something that really jumps out to me about South Carolina's offensive success is that it always tends to come when they have good (sometimes insanely good) field position. See below:

vs. Old Dominion
3 plays, 3 yards: Touchdown
13 plays, 53 yards: Field Goal
3 plays, 0 yards: Punt
6 plays, 13 yards: Punt
1 play, 5 yards: Fumble
10 plays, 39 yards: Punt
5 plays, 13 yards Field Goal
16 plays, 60 yards: Field Goal
7 plays, 63 yards: Missed Field Goal
3 plays, 8 yards: Punt
5 plays, 17 yards: Punt
2 plays, 6 yards: Touchdown
3 plays, 5 yards: Punt

2 Touchdowns, 4 Field Goal Attempts, 6 Punts, 1 Fumble

@ Kentucky
3 plays, 2 yards: Fumble
4 plays, 61 yards: Touchdown
3 plays, 3 yards: Punt
3 plays 8 yards: Punt
6 plays, 20 yards: Field Goal
2 plays, -7 yards: Interception
3 plays, 2 yards: Punt
7 plays, 58 yards: Touchdown
9 plays, 43 yards: Touchdown
6 plays, 36 yards: Punt

3 Touchdowns, 1 Field Goal Attempt, 4 Punts, 1 Fumble, 1 Interception

As you can see above, when South Carolina has to drive 70 yards or longer, they cannot do it. Their longest drive of the season so far has been a 63 yard drive against Old Dominion which ended in a missed Field Goal. LaNorris Sellers is not good enough to sustain drives. A big key to this game for me will be our offense making sure to give our defense good field position all game. If we avoid going 3 and out and don't turn the ball over, South Carolina is going to struggle to get to double-digit points.

Great info. Hopefully this trend continues.

Yeah I didnt watch that game so I was looking at the PBP and stats before this weeks game and it is crazy how out of hand it got while USC’s offense was pretty putrid.

252 yards total offense.

If Kentucky has any success moving the ball and could have pinned them deep regularly idk if USc scores 20.

So, in theory, if we do not give up big plays, we win the game comfortably.

Devil's advocate - I would imagine this is true for all schools pretty much. Drives over 70 yards produce less points than drives from shorter distances.

It's a clash of the crapshoots then, because the LSU D has given up quite a few long drives.

valid point, but the point I'm making is that SC has never had a drive longer than 63 yards. so far this year, if they've had to start inside their own 35 yard line, they have not scored a single TD.

Gotcha...

Do you have LSU's drives summary? (or tell me where to look, just curious)

Go back and watch the game to see how many of those yards were gained on just total coverage busts by Kentucky. It’s probably half on 4-5 plays

Nichols got the bulk of their running yards on that one play for the TD at beginning of 3rd qtr. Other than that they didn't really run the ball that well on us and on their extended drives on 3rd down they seem to always get the 1st when running right at perkins. Go back and watch the game. He constantly took himself out of the gap and got blocked. Hopefully the changes they have made will rectify this. i don't see SC being able to just run it on us and if we can continue with the QB pressure we have been bringing their QB is no Moss . And USC didn't really run the ball on us until the end of the 4th qtr when, in my opinion, the altitude and time change took it's toll. I expect to win this game by at least 14.

I haven't had a chance to watch much of the Old Dominion game, but from what I watched in the Kentucky game, it was clear that any time South Carolina had anything more than a 3rd and 5, they basically conceded it with a check down or a run. It looks like they would rather take their chances on an easy pass or run and punt than a contested medium or deep route.

nichols had 295 yards.

232 of it came on 3 drives.

they gained 63 on the other 7.

and yes, it is very concerning that nicholls had 2 long sustained TD drives.

But that game wasn’t the desalted people make it out to be.

They punted 4 times, had a turnover, turned it over on downs 2 more times.
