Kelly has been there 3 years. Why is it taking so long to build a good defense?

He’s had what, 3 recruiting classes? 25 players a year, half of them work out. That’s 12 a year. Just seems like they should have made more progress by now.

I like our young corners but we have no depth on the DL. Safeties have been poor for years. LBs i think will improve with Baker but the Perkins ineffectiveness is depressing.

If all 12 were defensive players then yeah we would be stacked but it’s not. Kelly inherited no talent on defense and then had to fire a DC so the defense is taking a little longer to build than the offense. He had good pieces to work with on offense when he came in. He has filled the CB and S positions in nicely in the last recruiting class now he needs DL and we will see much improvement

Added to that, Kelly took over a poor defense from Ed. A complete rebuild that House was not equipped to handle. Still 100% on CBK.

What’s wild is the 2022 defense, put together with chicken wire and duct tape, is his best. Year 3 there are no excuses being this bad.

How should he be used? Because they tried to use him late last year like his freshman season and tackles did to him what they wanted. He is not a DE a s should not be blitzing unless from the safety spot. Face it, he isn’t a LB. He had a excellent LB coach in House and now has Baker. Maybe Perkins issues lie between his ears.

If there is one thing that his tenure at ND showed us is that he can rebuild programs, but can’t win championships at this level. It won’t be any different here.

Ask the Coach ....I'm sure he'll give you a good excuse that does put any responsibility on himself
