LINK
Rough night in coverage for both burns and Gilbert. They cannot be the best options we have at star and safety

While you’re at it factor in Sage Ryan

I knew to be concerned when A&M fans didn’t care when Gilbert left and were saying he was terrible

Would love to see sage ryan’s stats

Burns is not an SEC defender. Period

I’m not clicking that link—or defending either player—but catches and yards aren’t given up in a vacuum. We didn’t have 2 safeties—one playing a glorified LB position—playing man all game.
That said, those USC WRs made some fricking incredible plays and their Qb threw them some incredible balls. The biggest mismatch in the entire game was easily their WRs on our DBs. Yet all that and the best play caller in college football, they still only managed 27 points against us. And our offense decided to start giving them the ball back in the 4th quarter like it was their fricking job.
Burns sucks, and frick him for that penalty. Gilbert is too early to tell. But I’m not blaming that game on just those 2. He’ll, their QB threw for like 370-something. There’s another 200+ yards unaccounted for. Thread fricking sucks.

I was shocked with Gilbert tbh. I guess I shouldn’t have been with how crap he was in the Spring Game.
But he was high transfer target from a good defense.
He was TRASH. Everytime there was a big catch, he was usually in coverage. And i use that loosely because “in coverage” was him being about 5 yards away from his man. One point he even stumbled and gave up a giant catch.
He stinks and it caught me fairly off guard. Thought we’d have at least one good player in the secondary with him. In a crazy (and unbelievable plot twist) he may be the worst of all of them which is damn near impossible to do

Major Burns was targeted 6 times and allowed 6 catches. Jesus.

The last part of your take is a scary possibility considering sage Ryan and major burns are also starters in this secondary but boy was I disappointed in his performance too. I thot we finally found a safety that has a ton of experience and will stabilize the backend but Lincoln Riley was finding and attacking him a good portion of the night. He looked outmatched trying to hang with USC’s wideouts

Burns needs to transfer. No common sense. Hurt the team.

Truly don’t understand why the staff thot moving him inside and having covering speedy slot receivers was a good idea. I get they thing he’ll be less of liability playing more around the box then being relied on for downfield coverage but teams can still exploit him in slot coverage

Honestly, they did not look good. But as mentioned above, we played zone.
IMO: zone coverage is hardly successful when the QB has all day to let WR find the holes and sit in them. That was part of our problem. We had success in zone when we brought a blitz with it or got some pressure. But even when it was a quick pass, we would have guys in wrong area and looked clueless when an offensive player would transition zones half the time.
I cannot remember us running a zone defense successfully in recent years. I’d rather see us in a man coverage with 2 deep or 1 deep/spy than what we do now.
