what is the boards opinions of the 4 or 5 best day trips from ghent? World War Sites are top interests. Plan would be to spend a day in each spot and return to ghent hotel each night.

ETA: we are starting in Normandy and will work (drive) our way to Ghent

I cant comment of world war sites, but Brugges is a very short train ride away and well worth a day.

One of my to do list trips is a northern France, Belgium, Holland trip.

Ghent does look to be one of the better options for being centrally located in Belgium. Depending on your wants and needs though, I'm not sure it would be better to spend 4-5 nights in one place and drive back every single night, as opposed to moving north to south or east to west or whatever. I know it can save some money to rent an apt or house for 4-5 days so maybe it does make sense.

Ghent is a good base and worthy of a day itself. From there you can do easy day trips to Bruges, Antwerp and Brussels/Louvern.

For WWI sites do a day trip to Ypres and visit the In Flanders Fields museum, Menin Gate for the Last Post Ceremony and also the Passchendaelle Museum.

WWII is a bit more problematic - Bastogne has some of the best things to see and do, but it is on the far side of the country and not easily accessible by public transport. May need to rent a car and drive over there and spend the night.

If you are into zoos, Belgium has what many consider to be Europe's best zoo at Pairi Daiza.

Also many consider Belgian beer making to be the best, so you can dive into that if you want.

I have never been to Ghent but I have been to Normandy, specifically Bayeux. I would try to spend at least a couple of days in Bayeux. You can tour the D-Day beaches extensively (I recommend Overlord Tours) and drive to Mount St. Michel for a day trip. Bayeux itself is a charming town to visit with an intact Old Town (the only place around there that was not bombed during WW II) a beautiful cathedral, and several good restaurants,

Easy rail connections to Antwerp, like someone else pointed out.

Other suggestions were good, too. For kicks, see what the timing looks like for a trip to Cologne or maybe even Paris (get the high speed train in Brussels.)

Don’t spend time in Brussels.
