I know pre emergent needs to be sprayed during spring but is it ok to spray prodiamine during the summer to help prevent crabgrass from sprouting once spring spray wears off?

The best day to spray pre emergent is today.

I’m glad you asked this because I put pre-emergent out in the fall and spring. However, I still get summer weeds probably from birds pooping in my yard, excessive wind off Mobile Bay, neighbors have multiple weed issues, etc. I sprayed my entire yard recently with Celsius WG and Certainty and I still have weeds popping up. Nothing major but enough that it’s a pain in the butt to constantly spot spray every 2-3 weeks or so because I must miss spraying the juvenile weeds I can’t see.

Yes - some make 3 applications per year - for example for S LA, mid-Feb, mid-May, and mid-Sep/early Oct. The important thing is not to exceed the labeled maximum total application amount annually for a specific pre-emergent - that figure will be provided on the label. Some, like me, may chose to use a different pre-emergent herbicide for one or 2 of the applications.

I use Specticle Flo in fall around October. Would it be ok to make 3 applications of prodiamine during the year and one using Specticle Flo in the fall?

It would be better for a professional like ronk to weigh in on this - I’m not really sure, but I think you should have sufficient weed suppression with 2 Prodiamine applications, mid-Feb & mid-May, apply 1/2 max annual rate for your grass type, and then Specticle in late Sept/early Oct. Pre-emergent does suppress root growth somewhat in lawn grass, so I’d be concerned of overdoing it.

No. Do not over use pre ems. I am not on the scholastic side of things so I don’t participate in research groups. I am on the holy shite what happened side of things and especially with St Aug there is a major uptick in complete deaths of lawns. Most pre ems work by inhibiting root growth and you see more people doing split apps in the spring and fall. That’s 4 apps of pre ems (not 4 full strength apps but none the less). From what I have seen is the increase in chemicals being applied has decreased the vigor of the lawn.

This year I did a single app of prodiamine and will do a single app of specticle. I will skip the spring prodiamine app in 2025 as will all of my St Aug. customers

On a side note, pull the weeds. I walk my lawn every day and pull what I see. That’s so much better than spraying.

That’s what I have been doing and it’s enjoyable but it looks like it’s young weeds that sprout from missing when I spot spray. I spot spray every two weeks so I try to pull in between that time in areas that don’t have as much.
