In 2010, McAfee had a major glitch with Windows XP that took down much of the internet. George Kurtz was McAfee's CTO at that time is now the CEO of Crowdstrike. The McAfee mistake cost the company so much they ended up selling to Intel.

I remember that. They sent an update that quarantined a file which was essentially the OS kernel.

Had this happen to me personally with norton anti virus a few years back on my windows machine. Computer ended up in a continuous loop of restarting. Not sure if i ended up rolling back the issue or just reformatting my drive.
