Haha
Just got out of this show in birmingham
Please, if this tour is near you, please go
It’s very entertaining even if you don’t like him

What exactly happened that would make you laugh and say it’s entertaining?

I was planning to go to it, and completely forgot it was yesterday. I bet it was great !
The Lyric Theatre is a great venue acoustically, but those seats are not very good if your a tall person.

He stopped half of the songs to yell at people

So just him and an acoustic guitar? He's been releasing a ton of covers (not really good versions) lately. Really wish i had caught him w/ the Cardinals. Huge catalogue with a lot of great songs.

See him on this tour. Very enjoyable. Over three hours in acoustic and piano. He’s a little manic but still a very good performance

Saw him with a version of The Cardinals last summer but am hoping he adds another solo leg later this year. I read he is featuring Love Is Hell and the self-titled album which are some of his best work.

Agreed. He plays a lot of stuff. Even some old whiskeytown songs. I saw him about a year and a half ago. He improvised a song about me. lol

Saw him at the Joy in NOLA Sunday night...3 hour and 15 minute set. 35 songs.
Tour was originally billed as a "Love is Hell" and "Self-Titled" heavy set.
Hit most of his catalog including a great new song "Shining Thru the Dark" off of one of his new albums and "Crescent City" by Lucinda Williams
Never know if you are going to get a melt-down, crazy ramblings but if he repeats what he did live Sunday night I recommend catching this tour.

How many times did he stop a song half way?
One dude got a total expletive laced bitch out for 5 min for his green camera light
Ryan tried to get some points back by running to the back of the concert hall to help a wheelchair viewer and brought him up front so he could see better
And had his assistant bring him water all night
Ryan literally had to comment before each song about the people who were not seated
He even came out for his introduction, saw a lot of people not seated
Went back to the back stage and did it all over again

He has Meniere's disease and gets really touchy about it and camera flash. Among other things.

Yea he said using that green light was the equivalent to him being on a frozen lake wearing a leg cast and that guy kicking his leg from underneath him

The guy has written some incredible albums and struggled with addiction as bad as some of the worst of them. He’s an artist to the core whether that’s a good thing or a bad thing, if you were expecting some regular ole pool hall Joe then I dunno what to tell you. He’s weird and quirky, and some of his music sucks. Some of it is genius.

I saw him last year. Props to the long show (3 hours) and it was jammier than I anticipated (had Grateful Dead qualities, but Ryan just doesn’t have the chops on the guitar imo).
That said, he did go in a tirade about an usher which was a little uncalled for. Then, about an hour later, he made up some off the cuff song about the usher, which, again, was both uncalled for, stupid and a waste of time. It wasn’t funny and the sheep “forced laugh” their way through it. It was annoying. I also think he played the same song twice.
That’s what I think of him…great, talented artist/musician/songwriter. Very diverse and eclectic. Some songs are incredible and stand the test of time. Some are hot garbage. His catalog is overly extensive to a detriment. And, he’s annoying and unlikable. He’s the pudgy, goth, emo kid that you all went to school with that has great talent, he’s just annoying, whiney, always put out and unlikable.

Yup. Makes you annoyed he wrote stuff like my winding wheel and come pick me up. He’s not a very likeable person and kinda creepy imo

One of my biggest criticisms of him has always been that he just doesn't have a filter. He puts out some incredible stuff and then right behind it will be crap. Not even....."well, it's not that bad" type stuff. Just really bad.
But the highs are so high with him.

His behavior has gotten more erratic with age, and his appearance has changed considerably as well, since you mentioned him being pudgy.
I'm surprised he's still able to tour like he does, but he may not have a choice either. Seems like the own-worst-enemy type that needed to be humbled. I'm not a fan of cancel culture in general, but I imagine he's made a lot of enemies over the years and paid for it several years back with the hit pieces on him.
Ryan's had some of the best live shows I've seen with plenty funny banter and some of the worst with tantrums. His 2000s-era run of albums from Heartbreaker to Cold Roses is outstanding, and that doesn't even count Whiskeytown before it.

1st time I saw him was 2005 at House of Blues for the Cold Roses tour with the Cardinals. Still to this day one of the greatest shows I've ever seen live and he had a meltdown to end it. This after 2 1/2 hours of some of the best live music I've ever seen.
While trying to play a piano and without a mic you could not hear him over the bar and people talking/ordering drinks. He yelled out "Playing at House of Blues is like playing at Walmart" and stormed off the stage ending the show.
Me and my friend just looked at each other and said this was either the best or worst show I've ever seen.
Thought of that night at his NOLA show the other night as it was acoustic only...he finally has the crowd quiet for the most part and we got over 3 hours of music.

Haha. I rarely go to HOB here anymore, but yappers have ruined shows at various venues here for me in the past. I have a pretty high tolerance for it, too.
It sounds like driving to Austin to see Ryan play solo last weekend would've been worth it.

I would argue being sober has made his shows far more consistent than they used to be.
