Looking to lock in a last minute trip to Maui this week, me the wife and 15 year old and 12 year old sons. Looking to go to Maui. Any recs on best resorts or areas? Want to have a place nice enough to chill at for a couple of our days, the others will do some sight seeing. Biggest question for anyone been lately is the impact of the fires? It seems Lahaina is still closed, but any other impact we should be aware of, or any other island recs that could fit the desires of a decent resort with a few restaurants onsite a couple nicer pools and beach access for the days we are planning on staying in? Thanks.

Any particular resort in that area or places you have stayed you enjoyed?

No, but in fact, we continually choose short term rentals over resorts. We prefer a condo or small beach house with a full kitchen and a little more privacy than what resorts offer. You can search on VRBO or Airbnb from Kihei all the way up north until the shoreline makes the turn to the west and find options for a lot of different price points.

Just stay in the towns west of Lahiana.

Maui has that great water quality and really nice views but you might also want to consider Kauai. The Grand Hyatt on the south shore is incredible and the Westin Princeville on the North Shore has on site snorkeling and is close to Hanalei town which is cool. Just a thought if you decide to avoid Maui. I still can’t believe that happened. Poor people.

Lahaina was the little small town decimated

The resort areas near kaanapali were all fine and are all nice
Only downside is the food places around this area were really expensive and Lahaina was a place you could go eat and drink much cheaper

Yeah I know when I went to Kaanapali going to Lahaina was a highlight. What a great little town that was.

The Grand Hyatt on the south shore is incredible
and this is where we booked. Looked like a beautiful place.

Have a pretty good week planned. Leaving July 16.

It’s sad knowing that majestic banyan tree in the middle of town is gone.

Do yourself a favor and head to the northshore (Princeville/Hanalei) too. That's where you get a lot of the classic Kauai scenery.

You are going to be amazed at those two pools. If you like hiking head over to the cliffs by the ocean and go from there. FYI, I think Chicken has stayed there as well. The spa is amazing and the exercise class run in the morning is incredible. That might be my favorite resort on the planet, I’ve been twice. Kauai may be better than Maui imho, except for water quality which isn’t even close. You can drive up to Princeville Hanalei to “ the tunnels “ for decent snorkeling or even walk 10 minutes from the resort and do it in front of a little park. Lots of turtles to swim with there on the sunny south side.

You chose well, my friend !

We are excited. Just booked a Jeep for 5 of our days. Plan on quite a bit of driving and sight seeing. Wife wants to book a few excursions for the boys and us, such as zip lining, a snorkel cruise, etc. Boys and I will play golf one day is the plan. Do you guys do anything like that? If so, does it pay to book way ahead?

The course is amazing and a 2 minute walk. I didn’t but some buddies of mine did and called ahead. Also Drive north to Princeville and Hanalei for sure.

The one thing I have recommended on this board over the years that has gotten the biggest rave reviews is the Power Boat tour off the Kaanapali coast. It’s a perfect day. We have done it twice through Captain Dave’s. A must.

Waimea Canyon is as beautiful a spot as there is . You can take hikes of various difficulty and distances. A must.

And of course DAILY shave ice. Ask the hotel who has the best but we found a place near the Canyon where we went every single day.

Captain Andy’s. It’s incredible. Not sure what the name of the marina is.

It’s pricy but well worth it. You will never do a lame vomit- inducing dinner cruise again. This is an incredible day, service is great, they feed you and a total adrenaline rush. I would never go and not do this and everyone I’ve recommended it to raves.

Thanks, the only option is see is a raft tour for 4500, is that what you are talking about? Going into the caves and such?

Yeah I think so. Any of the power rafting trips on the Naapali coast are good so maybe compare prices with other companies. The one I recommend is the 6 hour trip with lunch. I’ve only done Captain Andy. They take you onshore to this little research village annd feed you and take you into caves I guess. That part is really not such a big deal.
