Yard/Grass Question - Bermuda and St.Aug
Posted on 6/8/24 at 2:32 pm

So the city came and replaced the buried storm drain and had to dig up about 10’ of the yard the full length of my property (and my adjoining neighbors as well). They fixed the issue but they laid Bermuda and we all have St. Aug.
Can I just seed St Aug over it or do I need to pull it all up and lay St. Aug down?

St Aug cannot be seeded, it’s only available in sod.
Bermuda and St Aug are vastly different in regards to treatment and care. If you have a majority of St Aug, I’d call the city and see if they’d replace since they replanted to the incorrect grass type.
If not, I’d certainly suggest you replace it. Bermuda is much more aggressive than St Aug and it will start to creep into the lawn.

Bermuda, given the right conditions, will overtake your St Augustine. pull it up and go buy a plugs, squares, half pallet, or full pallet depending on the size of the spot.

Thanks. I guess I’ll have a fun week ahead ripping it all out.

Make city replace with correct grass. Not sure about LA but in TX, cities and utilities have a duty to repair easements to pervious condition under most circumstances.
If the area is very sunny, the bermuda will start taking over your SA. If the area is mostly shady, your SA will reclaim the bermuda.

First if the yard is full sun roll with the Bermuda. If you have shade I would be a city hall first thing morning with pictures demanding that they come out and fix it.

You can’t be serious. They don’t care. He should be happy they even smoothed it out enough to lay sod much less put sod on it.
To 99.999% of the world, grass is grass, they don’t care what kind it is.

St Aug is disease prone, highly susceptible to torpedo grass intrusion and requires meticulous care to maintain. Oh and it hates heavy clay because it can’t spread its roots and will just stop growing and look yellow until you aerate and topdress the **** out of it for a few years.
If everything plays out perfectly I think it looks great, but even professionals struggle to keep St Aug in peak condition.
Bermuda requires lots of cutting and fertilizer but otherwise is about the least disease and rot prone grass on the market. If I were resodding it would be with Bermuda.

Call the damn city and threaten to sue. This is absurd. They are totally different types of grass.

If you want St. Aug, that is. To ronk's point, if you have full sun Bermuda might be the better option. I actually love the parts of my property that are Bermuda. Some people call it a weed, I call it a resilient, self-repairing turf grass that my kids can't even hurt (dog piss is another story).
