Playing the same thing on guitar, over and over again, trying to get it right...

now I have these slots worn into the callouses on my fingers and it's causing problems on string release.
Anybody else have this problem? How do you remedy it? Soaking in some oil or something?

Sandpaper, pumice stone, or emery board.

Sandpaper

Done this, and still have the slots on my index and middle finger. I'm getting down where the sandpaper is getting painful too.
I've been rubbing the tips with my wife's dermasil lotion this morning and that seems to be helping a bit.
I shouldn't have let it get this bad.

I've used fingernail clippers to trim the nasty edges around my callouses, so I don't see why that couldn't help.

That said, what the hell are you playing? A fencepost with strung with medium-heavies and tuned up an octave?

No man, my guitars are right and currently all tuned down a whole step for this one thing I'm working on.
I've become obsessed with getting it right and I spend all my time on it.
I believe the effort is going to pay off though.

Damn, man. Creating this song has become an odyssey for you.

You know, it really has, it's OK though. I like how it's turning out, more every day.
I've written hundreds of songs and most of them didn't require more than a few hours of actual work, but they have simple straightforward themes and lyrics that are hard to screw up.
This one is more complicated, because the mood has to be just right, or it comes across as depressing, when it's supposed to be tongue in cheek sort of morbidly humorous. Almost like a cartoon.
I'm almost there with it.
It'll get posted here as soon as I get my final demo finished.
