It is obviously illegal to offer the services for a fee or for any other means of compensation. You, may, however be a better surveyor than some with which I have delt in the past. The following is a communication that I found necessary to sent to a firm of "PROFESSIONAL SURVEYORS" in regards to a property that I was purchasing.

Re: Preliminary Survey and Legal Description
Terry,
I had not been able to examine and study the preliminary document in detail until today and I did not want to respond until I had done so. I attempted to call you today but you were out of the office. The young lady with whom I spoke provided me with this e-mail address at which to contact you.
Regarding the survey, what I find raises more questions than it provides answers. You show a new easement in the southeasterly corner of the plot of which I was unaware and I have subsequently obtained a copy of that document. What I find to be quite disturbing is that you show the section line and quarter/quarter line at a different angle of deflection than any other previous surveys and in fact show the quarter/quarter line as deflecting northward of East whereas all other legal descriptions which I have reviewed in this area show it deflecting southward of East. Your numbers appear to differ by a couple of degrees on the North/South Section Line deflection as well. I note that you show the North and South boundaries as being of differing lengths and the East and West property lines as being of both differing lengths and as being other than parallel, whereas all prior legal descriptions reported equal lengths and parallelism of the opposite sides. At this time It appears as though angular deflections are only confusing the issue as I can site five different and conflicting angular deflections for the same line on the various legal descriptions on this and adjacent properties. In my book these angular deflections should all be based on a true North-South line but it almost appears as though everyone is choosing his own North.
I am no surveyor but have spent over 50 years in the engineering profession and over 25 years as a real estate broker and I cannot find it in my conscience to overlook the discrepancies I have seen in the various legal descriptions for this and various adjacent properties. I have analyzed what you are reporting and must admit that at this time I am not prepared to accept what I am seeing. Perhaps you can explain the reasons behind these variables. I will ask you to provide me with the GPS coordinates for the various points that you have located and those for the Section Corner North and the Quarter Corner South as well as that of the Quarter Quarter Corner adjacent. Obtaining those numbers may result in some clarification as I can then use my computer to verify the pin locations to my own satisfaction.
I am attaching a modified copy of the document which I had previously provided showing some of these conflicting legal descriptions. The modification to this document is the addition of the black outline described in the new legal description which you provided on the preliminary survey report. The boundaries and dimensions shown in black are believed to be in exact conformity with the angular deflections and distances as described in the proposed new legal description. There may be some discrepancy between your numbers and mine inasmuch as the length dimensions provided in the description were rounded to feet and hundredths of a foot and my software will carry the computations out to many more significant digits. You will find that the end of the path in the legal description does not return to the Point of Beginning as stated but rather it falls short of achieving that goal by 3.1217 feet as noted on that layout.
I am also attaching a screen shot from Google Earth whereon I have overlain an outline of this legal description over that which I had previously developed.
I have a meeting to attend on Monday afternoon but may be available to discuss this further Monday morning if that is convenient for you.
Thank You,

Thank You,
Quoting this as the exact reason why Land Surveying requires professional licensure...

But not at all for the reasons he thinks. Surveyors interpret things wrong all the time, but there are very easy explanations for most all his points. I'll leave that discussion between him and his surveyor. This post screams of "I'm an engineer, and I know more about surveying than surveyors" all while not actually understanding anything about surveying. That said, the surveyor very well could have blundered with that amount of misclosure.

Ain't no surveyor stretching out his calls to ten thousandths of a foot.

Sure, you can set whatever software you use to measure out to however many decimals you want to see, but that's not whats accurately being measured to.

My boy Antib551 said it best.
