That's definitely something that non book readers wouldn't realize but I actually didn't mind that change. It added to the urgency of the journey. In the book by that point Frodo had essentially forgotten about it, whereas in the movie the tension and urgency was still here. I'm all for changing the source as little as possible, but I thought that was a good change.

Just to be clear I don't like the idea, but I think the urgency you mention would kind of shift to confusion and alarm about why he is coming back after a long time without his usual warm greeting and getting straight to business.
