Anybody know anything about the Blue Mesa Reservoir bridge closure in colorado?

Just heard about this today and have a trip planned this fall that will/was going to involve lake city (over that bridge) to black canyon, to Ouray, and down to Durango.
Just wondering if there was any inside scoop on if this was going to result in a repair or them having to build a new bridge basically.
It's like a 6 hour detour around it so wasn't sure if I might need to rethink my route and plans.

You must be talking about the bridge at sapinero in that case. They were doing construction farther west on 50 last year, down along blue creek and you could get tied up there for a few hours if you didn’t hit the stoppage just right.

Cross that when you get there....or not.

My favorite area of Colorado. Black Canyon is very cool.

No, this is new. They just found a 3 inch crack in one of the steel beams on April 20th and shut it down. No real official timelines being released yet.

I've been to black canyon but never Ouray or the million dollar highway. Was going to be a big part of this trip.

I see that’s not the bridge. Appears to be the bridge at the pinnacles. You can take 26 (dirt road if I’m remembering correctly) coming from lake city and hit 50 and never need to cross that bridge. 26 will put you on 50 farther west than the closure.

There’s a locals-only option open right now and CDOT is working to improve that road but I’ve been told they are checking to make sure that you are a local using the detour. Plan on having to go around for the foreseeable future.

They are saying that's locals only for now at least

I love that loop. It’s been 20+ years though.

I love Ouray and that area. If you are going for off-roading there are more trails than you can do in a year in that area. Hit up Ray’s between Montrose and Ridgway on your way in and stock up.

Would love to, but we are meeting my Dad out there and will be in a subaru outback (no, he's not a lesbian). I was wondering if there was any chance of taking it over engineer pass/alpine loop from lake city to ouray if we took the easiest roads. That would be pretty and fun, but I don't know if the outback could handle it, even if we took the least technical roads.

Engineer pass maybe. I saw some Texas baws on it in a stock 4WD F150 once.

What ply tires? I’d be concerned about a puncture. I saw similar vehicles coming off of cinnamon pass, but they were heading eastbound. I saw several 2wd cars at the trailhead for Handies, but I’m sure they came from lake city way.

The worst stretch of the trail between lake city and and Ouray is where it approaches the highway on the Ouray side, fwiw.
Also probably easier to ascend that stretch rather than descend.
I've done different parts of the loop, but not recently. I do remember going Lake City to Silverton instead of Ouray if we were in the old jeep 4wd station wagon and not in an SUV/ real jeep. And then taking the highway to Ouray from Silverton, I think.
Not sure where that bridge is, though.

Mineral creek? Yeah, I've read Id want to avoid that. But there are two easier ways down.
No sure about the tires. It's pretty much just stock though to my knowledge.

Looks like Kebler pass will be a option by fall. I've driven that before and it's gorgeous and pretty easy.

Can't speak to the other 2 ways, but I assume Silverton was easiest for 'normal' cars. Since it was a consistent choice based on the vehicle we had.
But also lots of locals and especially the lodges and small b&b places will rent you a jeep for the day/stay. I'd ask whoever you plan on staying with if they do that.
Such a great area- I'm trying to talk my wife into going soon now that the kids are out of diapers, but she's more destination than roadtrip type.

That is a great ride from Ouray to Durango - hope it works out you.
