Rural areas were fine 30+ years ago when one salary could cover a family of 6. If the breadwinner had a longer commute, that was okay because there was a higher chance there was a SAHM there to take care of the kids.

Now, both parents have to work to afford a home. So both parents have to work within earshot of school because kids get sick, or it's about to rain hard so school got cancelled...

The jobs are in the suburbs and cities, and the housing isn't keeping up.
