Tornado survivor here. Caused 3 trees to land on my home while we were inside. We had all crowded in 1 bedroom and got lucky the trees fell on other parts of the house. Then had to crawl out and run through the rain/storm to find shelter because the gas line was leaking and we could smell it. Was hell on earth. We watch the weather like a hawk now to be ready in advance. Hide in neighbors barn till it blew over.
Our dogs are still petrified at the hint of a storm to this day.
The only people that gave us actual help were the local Methodist church. Everyone else just did the "if you need anything let me know" line. Church showed up with hot meals and gift cards to buy a change of clothes.
Offering help and giving help are two different things. Nobody wants to ask for help and feel like a burden.
