Personally I don’t get the value in a whole home generator. Get one big enough to power your fridge and a window unit so you can get by a few days. If I’m in a place where power is out for week + then I just assume not be there either.
The price to include the up keep just don’t seem worth it.
Next time a tropical system shuts down the grid for an extended period in 95+ degree high humidity weather you’d be rethinking things. Some folks don’t have family or friends living far enough away to be able to go somewhere. Throw in $250-$300 a day hotels not including food and the cost regarding a generator doesn’t seem so high.
I installed a 2200 generac in 2020 for under $7500. Had my dad use his Lowe’s discount to order the generator, poured a cement pad, trenched my own gas line, paid electrician on the side, new 500 gallon propane tank. Peace of mind is invaluable.
