Going there in June..but the past trips I've done with family is stay in Townsend, TN and then see the western end of the park. The BRP is a fun drive. That was nearly 20 years ago while in high school
This year flying into Asheville then driving through the NC side.

I love staying in Townsend except it is a dark winding drive at night when coming back from PF or restaurants. Just my two cents.

Went for the first time last year in June. We stayed in a cabin in between Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Its a tourist trap area but I didn't mind, the crowds weren't bad and the weather and scenery were awesome. Drove an ATV through the Smokey Mountain National Park and saw several bears, some were pretty close. Lots of things to do in that area. Wherever you go, enjoy your trip!

Kinda depends on what you want to do
There’s variety between High end resort type or cabin in the woods,
I always recommend highlands as a very nice unique town with one of the nicest hotels in the country - Old Edward’s inn. The town has plenty of restaurants shopping and some decent hiking nearby.
Great place to sit on a porch and stare at the incredible views if you stay at a house with a view
Cashiers has a nice hotel called high Hampton owned by the same family as the blackberry resort in Tennessee which is another place I recommend but pricey
Brevard is nice town to do outdoors stuff- river rafting and hiking
Plenty of other spots but depends on what you like/want
