This. All the times they traded up and tossed future 1s out the door, but when you have a chance to move up only a few spots to get your franchise QB you cross your fingers and wait? arse holes, all of them.
Revisionist history.
The Saints had the 11th pick. Very few mock drafts had Mahomes going before 11. Trubisky was the higher rated QB. The Saints weren't trading into the top 3-5 to get a QB who looked at as a bit of a "project". Once the draft got past the Jets as No. 6, it looked like Mahomes being avaialbe at 11 was going to be a reality. No. 7 (Chargers - Rivers), No. 8 (Panthers - Newton) and No. 9 (Bengals - Dalton) weren't in the QB market. Most figured Buffalo at 10 wanted a CB...which would probably be Lattimore. All the Saints had to do was wait it out...until KC made what will probably go down as the boldest and maybe the best draft day trade ever by paying a ransom to jump from 27 to 10 SPECIFICALLY to get ahead of New Orleans. Unlike the Saints who could have reasonably expected Mahomes to be available at 11, KC knew there was zero chance he would be there at 27. So that HAD to make a move.
In hindsight the Saints should have made a move up. But as the draft was unfolding there wasn't anything to suggest that would be necessary.
The information I want to know (and maybe it's been discussed before) is who tipped KC off that the Saints were taking Mahomes? You don't make that big of a jump to specifically get in front of one particular team unless you absolutely know you have to.

By all accounts Sean Payton had fallen in love with Mahomes and thought he’d be a great QB. My point is that they also felt that way about Davenport, Turner, etc. So why in this case didn’t you try to move up a few spots to secure Drew’s replacement?
So it’s not revisionist history is the sense that regardless of what Mahome’s grade was for every other team, where his projected slot was, the Saints/Payton valued him enough to take him had he dropped to 13. To be arrogant or foolish enough to think no other team in the league could possibly value him as highly turned out to bite Payton in the arse.
Now it’s highly possible Payton has embellished his interest in order to show how smart he was to have believed Mahomes would turn into a star. Any way you slice it it’s a huge miss on the Saints part and all the other teams who passed on him. What could have been.

Mahomes himself. He told KC's front office what teams were serious about him because he wanted to end up in KC. I heard him say it on the Kelce brothers podcast
