Venice Tuna Trip Question

Met some long time friends down in Venice and went out Friday to go tuna fishing on one of the charter boats.
Is it common for them to not let you actually fish? The two kids running the boat told us “they would hook them and we could real them in”.
Overall the experience was poor but this stuck out to me as being odd. Everybody on this trip could handle a fishing pole. We “caught” one yellowfin and a couple barracuda. Every other boat at the marina had at least 6 in the wheel barrels.

That’s right up there with an inshore guide positioning the boat where only he can cast to the fish. A big no no. They try that on me, and we are going to have words out there.

no, that is not common unless your charter captain is a prick.
list the name of the charter so we know not to book a trip with them.

It was Voodoo. We were supposed to go out on a 42 yellowfin but got swapped to a 39 the day before so I don’t know if they gave us the D team cause the regular captain couldn’t make it. Spent almost $1300 in fuel too.

Went out with Capt Eddie two years ago. His mate did help with repositioning the lines from time to time but that was it.

The only thing we repositioned was bean bags from the back to the front and to the back all day.

I lay down the expectations and rules before we go out, one of which is I’m paying the fees, the gas, the tip, and I expect this trip to be the way I want it.
One of the best trips we ever had was light tackle, “big” bass tackle and black fin and bonito. But that’s what that group wanted. Lots of action. Had a great time and laughed a lot that day.
Super strike was the outfitter.

It is common for the Capt and Deckhand to hand feed the line out when you’re chunking. Most of the time they show you what to do and let you take it over.
I see it as an ego thing. Sometimes the new ones are eager to put meat on the dock so they can show the other Capt’s they know what they’re doing and get some content for future bookings. They lose sight that it’s about showing the customer a good time, teaching about “how to”, and giving a well rounded experience. Unfortunately they can jump right to micro managing so they can prove they fit in. Sounds like they struck out all around. An outlier for Paradise as I’ve been with a couple of their boats, even late switched Capt’s, and had great trips

Fishing with live bait for tuna generally the captain and deckhand hook the fish. I think it’s because there are days where you will only get a few strikes and have to make it count.

I didn’t fish with paradise. We went with voodoo. At one point the captain cussed out the deckhand for not reeling on a bite. Deckhand was managing two poles. One of the six of us could have been doing it. Levelwinds and circle hooks aren’t fricking rocket science.

My bad. Got the two mixed up

I can see putting the baits out so people don’t backlash but once it’s in the water they should show you how to feed and let them eat.

I understand your frustration. I just never been on a
charter where the captain let customers hook the fish using live bait for tuna. Maybe when the fishing is on fire but when it’s slow the deckhand and captain will work the reels until a fish is hooked using live baits.

I wish I would have known this. For me that’s not fishing. Might as well take my boat out for a booze cruise and then stop and buy some tuna at rouses.

Based on your description, attitude, and grammar, I’d say you’re probably better off doing that anyway.

Pretty standard for them to do all the work getting fish on and then handing rod to customer to catch. You have to realize that a large percentage of their customers are idiots and will just create a cluster frick if they let them set lines, etc.

What do you mean by that?

We went with Super Strike a few years ago and they hooked the Tuna and handed us the poles. Didn't really know if that was considered normal or not so we just rolled with it. Had a good trip though.
Bottom rig fishing for snapper and grouper is much different and much easier in most cases.

That makes sense. I know they were probably stressed trying to find fish but we practically had to ask to reel in some of the barracuda.
