The Deer Hunter is for the type of movie goer who frequents boards like this. That way you can sniff your own farts and post things like how "impactful" and "profound" the movie was while really thinking, "Holy shite, I've enjoyed doing my taxes more than slogging through that borefest" or, "Did Cimino even hire an editor?"

I don't know how anyone defends this movie.

It's a masterclass in horrible editing and a rogue director. But it was the 70s and Directors got full control....which the studios realized was a mistake with the amount of money they were bleeding by roles of film dropping on the floor.
