After WW2 we had the baby boom, an industry boom, and an explosion in demand for homes/cars etc, There were far more jobs than men to fill them and companies had to keep paying higher wages and provide pensions & medical etc to compete.
The solution?
Push women into the work force to double the work force, create competition for those jobs, and thus reduce salaries/benefits etc..
