I understand the demographics are different but you’re correct, there is no logical explanation for LSU not simply buying the ghetto next to it. Turn it into student housing and keep it moving and grooving.

Most of the ghetto around LSU was formerly student housing. If you want to bitch; bitch about Baton Rouge allowing sprawl around the University with new developments that turn to shite quickly and HUD /Section 8. If code enforcement was used correctly. All those rat holes could be closed and bought at auction by developers or investment districts. This is a political problem and LSU is knee deep in it. They wouldn't want some over zealous legislator trying to cut more of their budget.

LSU built a lot of student housing on campus. They do this every 20-30 years in waves.

That almost makes a lot of off campus housing obsolete when they do it. And that housing usually either gets demolished or goes section 8.

Some kind of special district (I don't know the right term) should be created to really make development of ghettos hard around the university.

People are insane if they think BR politics and crime is not driving people out. It absolutely is. I used to count 75% of kids I knew as going to LSU. Now It is flipped and most are going to a mix of Tech, Ole Miss and State.
