Two years is about the longest I’ve gone.

Also, why doesn’t the battery warning light work in vehicles?

I’ve owned several vehicles across many different makes, they all have the warning light, and I’ve never been warned. It’s always one or two weak starts before I know I’m going to need a jump.

In my experiences, the battery light is usually an indicator that something is wrong with the alternator.
