Planting sunflowers for doves

First time to try this. I know it’s a bit early, but I want to start prepping at some point. Any pointers on types of seed, weed control, and fertilizer will be appreciated. I don’t have a row planter so planning on broadcasting. This will be on my property in NE Arkansas.

It’s not that early. 120 days for sunflowers

the seeds you need are black oil sunflower seeds
I broad cast mine last year and they did just fine. I will stagger plant them this year meaning will plant some with a couple of weeks in between so that they will mature at different times.
I will be putting out 200ish-250lbs of triple 17 fertilizer per acre.

Great idea!
What size plot will I need? This plot will just be for family and a few friends. Size is not an issue, just didn’t want to overdo it.

My wife takes some up to her parents store and sells them. $2-3 per stem.
she wanted to do that so they would last longer and she could make more money. The black oil seeds will flower starting in late just to July if planted this weekend.

Do you have a plan to keep deer out of them? Without protection they will eat them as soon as the sprout!

My field is between 4-5 acres

This. we tried a few years ago and the deer literally ate every single plant lol

Very rare that anyone manages to get themselves in trouble with doves by actually growing something, it’s when people “plant” something on September 1st. Arkansas is similar to MS, you can manipulate a standing crop and then hunt over it.

I have clover plots in the area that deer use. Hopefully that will take some pressure off of it. Guess I could overseed just in case.

I did not have any issues with deer getting in mine last year.
Doesn't mean they won't get into them this year, but didn't last year

Good luck I plant a lot of food plots (will start planting again this weekend! Can’t wait!). I have tried the last three years and the deer have eaten my sunflowers better than anything I have planted. I have gotten a total of 3 flowers in three years in a 5 acre stand. The only ones I have had success with are the ones I drilled at No colors place in a confinement that keeps deer and hogs out. If you figure it out please share I would LOVE to get them going on my place.

3 flowers In a 5 acre plot? Geez man, you got some hungry deer!!

Deer love sunflowers. I have had no luck with them without confinement . What are you planting this weekend?

No let me clarify that for you...
3 flowers in a 5 acre field over 3 plantings over 3 years...
I have sprayed pre emergent, bought clearfield seeds so I can spray for weeds and the deer just anhialiate them. Its absolutely nuts.
My wife always asks for a sunflower field and the only way I'm gonna get that I think is to build a wall.

We got a bunch of rain last two days but my place we have that's in the hills should be dry and we have gone full regenerative over the last 12 months there.
We are using Drop Tine Seed and will plant their Summer Reload, Summer Nourishment, Summer Squatch and Carolina Perennial.
When my lease dries out next to it in the Big Black river bottom will plant some regenerative there, but a lot of corn, vetch, clay peas, a few soybeans, and some varieties of millet, milo and gulp sunflowers to again attempt to have a dove field

You can plant sunflowers anywhere. You can hunt over them as they are. You can mow strips. You can do pretty much any manipulation of the grain that you want. You just can't add more grain or sunflower seeds to the field other than what you planted initially

Hell, shoot the deer. More meat.
