the life of me or my loved ones is NOT objectively more valuable then the life of someone trying to kill me or them or even rape my wife or daughter?
Do you believe humans possess innate value? If you do, then you understand that, objectively, no life is worth more than another. Do I personally value the lives of my kids more than the lives of virtually anyone else? Of course. That doesn’t mean anyone else does or that their lives objectively possess more worth than anyone else’s.
Someone doing a bad thing doesn’t erase their human dignity. It isn’t measurable. Humans all have it or we don’t.
quote:Correct. Thou shalt not kill doesn’t have any fine print.
I still have no right to kill them because... who am I to say that I am more worthy of living than they are? That... is your position?

The “killing babies” trope is weakening your argument. People aren’t arguing for the right to kill babies. But many of you are determined argue that aborting fully viable fetuses is the norm. The reality is actually. the contrary. 3rd trimester abortions are rare and then only when a matter of life and death.

What amazes me about the abortion issue is the way that the killings are celebrated with cakes and parties. A coworker who bakes cakes as a side hustle has been asked to bake cakes for women celebrating the murder of their child. Being a Christian, she turns down these jobs. The depravity is beyond what I could have imagined.

Neo-Kantianism is fun in a classroom. Just wait until next semester.

Of course it does. I'd also steer clear of relying on a translation error to support your argument.

Oh, the categorical imperative? You must be an atheist. I’m not studying philosophy. My position is more aligned with Aquinas and Catholic social teaching anyway.

Condescension noted.

Possessing all knowledge must be a terrible burden for you.

We will all stand before the Father or Jesus (if saved) one day and account for our actions.
Good luck explaining the "right to abortion" stance to the Almighty. Sounds like a terrible thing to experience.

K, so Kant with a dash of mythological seasoning.

Cool. We can come back to this one, too.

Or, we can do it now...

Of course. If it’s not your belief, it must be mythology.

You aren't one of those fundamentalist weirdos, are you?
Posted on 4/10/24 at 7:55 pm to DisplacedBuckeye
Calling you out for being a know-it-all makes me a fundamentalist weirdo now?
Idk. I wear pants and get haircuts.

It was a question based on your emotional response to my observation.

OK, then you accept that there's at least some mythology in religion.
That wasn't so hard, was it?

you’re nothing if not consistent.

Case in point.

Correct.
Now, back to the discussion.
Kantianism is your flavor, unless it's someone you know. In that case, how dare I...

Except that it's actually Thou Shalt Not Murder.

That’s your presumption. I already corrected you but you’re committed to Kant. Why?
Call me a fundamentalist weirdo but innate human dignity exists because humans are made in the image and likeness of God. And before you go all pompous intellectual and allude to being way more educated than me, people with post-graduate degrees skew religious.
Do you subscribe to utilitarianism? Would you be offended if I assumed you do?

Glad to have helped clear that up.

Has anyone screamed for carve outs for incest and rape?

Human dignity is a central concept in Kantian ethics. In the context of the points you've made, there's no useful distinction between Kant and Aquinas. We also get the added benefit of reducing your emotional reactions when I insult your religion.
Hopefully that clears it up for you.

So why do you have a preference for your friend's survival over the people he presumably killed? Were those individuals not made in the image and likeness of your god?
quote:

Education and intelligence aren't the same.
quote:
Do you subscribe to utilitarianism?
I dabble.
quote:
Would you be offended if I assumed you do?
Not at all. That would be an odd reaction.

Reading this made me audibly laugh. You must be fun at parties.
quote:because I know him? I never claimed to be impartial. No one is, anyway.

quote:you explicitly warned me not to challenge you on who is more educated of the two of us. Are we backpedaling now?
Education and intelligence aren't the same.

Of course. You strike me as more of a hedonist anyway.
