If the kid is as talented as his ranking coming out of HS, they really aren’t in a situation to turn that down. They can make the numbers work.
We have 2 spots left for scholarship players, we know we need a big man, so that leaves 1 guard spot left. We cant use that on another SG, who is going to handle the PG spot next year? Givens a true freshman and Williams who clearly isn't a PG?
This is why we're bringing in PGs for visits. They got the 2 guard in Cam Carter already. We cant just magically make numbers work, we know we only have 2 scholarship spots left. We could take a 3rd guy and use NIL as a walk on but thats not going to get you a good player, it's gets you a Hunter Dean.
So just think about that for a second if you can get 1 of those 3 remaining players in on just NIL as a walk on, Yates can make it that way, but will he be willing to accept that, or do we do that for a PG we desperately need? How about an actual good big man, will an actual good big man accept NIL and no scholarship?
If the guy wants to walk on and get NIL for a year then go for it. But I wouldnt be wasting one of my last 2 scholarships on a completely unproven freshman at a position NOT of need when we have 2 very glaring positions of need.

You can magically process the bigs that you don’t trust, to make room for the better bigs we would hypothetically get. Collins is a career 2.6 ppg guy. Fountain is a 5th year player who is giving you 5 ppg. They shouldn’t be untouchables on the roster.
Again, if this guy has the talent, you can make things work. If he’s a developmental piece, then you don’t.

I think McMahon is kind of caught in a spot of not really knowing what he wants in terms of the make up of the team.
He came to LSU from Murray St. Prior to his last season or so there the model was to get less recruited/overlooked players in and development them into a good team over the course of 3, 4, 5 years. That approach is just not really feasible anymore with over 1,000 players transferring each season.
In year 1 he simply had to do the best he could to put together a significantly new roster.
Going in to year 2 he talked about how he wanted to "get older" with transfers. He's mentioned that college basketball as a whole is now "older" than it has been in a long time, maybe ever, with guys getting an extra covid year, guys staying in school longer because of NIL, 4th and 5th year mid-major players moving to major conference teams via transfer, etc. As a result, LSU had a relatively "old" roster with most of the roster being 3rd, 4th, 5th year players. Only Reed, Ward, Williams, and Chest (who didn't play) were 1st or 2nd year players. 9 of the 13 players were Juniors, Seniors, Grad Students.
As of now, the roster has only 5 players who are in their 3rd year or beyond (Reed, Ward, Fountain, Carter, Collins). He has 3 HS signees and two returning 2nd year guys. If he were to add Yates that would be six 1-2 year players on the roster. That would make next year's team the "youngest" roster he's had (in terms of experience). Given his preference to play older/experienced players, would he be more willing to give a bigger role to young players? That would be a complete 180 from just last year.
IMO, prior to coming to LSU he only knew the mid-major model as that is the only level he coached. The major conf. level was already different before NIL/freedom of transfer. Now it is wildly different and it appears he's still trying to figure out how to adapt.
Long story short, if he takes Yates he has to be willing to rely on younger players more. If he's not, then don't take a kid you don't possibly think can play important minutes. Use that scholarship to get a more experienced guy you trust.
