Gimmicky.
I passed on the first one because it sounded like a repackaging of Taxi Driver to make money off a comic book franchise. This looks like more of the same with a musical gimmick tossed in for marketing.
Three quarters of every movie and TV show these days are about "dark, complex, morally ambiguous" characters. Are they going to connect this Joker back to the franchise at all? If not, it's just a cheap money grab. If you want to (once again) explore the complexities of mentally ill felons, there are countless better examples...they just come with a higher risk factor without the comic book crutch. This feels a bit like Natural Born Killers, an overglossed, overdone, sarcastic stab at a serious topic. But Natural Born Killers didn't call itself The Fantastic Four.
