Joker is a legit mentally-ill individual who just happens to go on a crime spree.
The best villains toe that line of being 49% relatable, and I think Phillips did an outstanding job of communicating Arthur's illness and just how fed up with the world he was
I don't agree that they made Joker very relatable here, as it was a bit too dark for a lot of people to relate to. It did make him interesting, just not relatable to most.
My issues with the first film are
1) This Joker is old as shite for an origin story. Some argue he didn't need an origin, I could go either way if done right but this is not done right.
2) Old and nothing alludes to him being capable of hatching brilliant plans. Even if he got letters and ideas from fans and such, nothing suggests he could put it together. At this age, this stage of loser, and going to Arkham, nothing is going to change him to being a criminal mastermind
I don't hate the idea of the first or even this film if it wasn't named Joker. I'm even a little intrigued to see what Gaga can do with the character and even the "musical" aspect can be done right by good director/writers. But none of that adds up to being tied to Batman/Joker.

Excellent point, and I should've clarified. The best villains are 49% relatable, and while most folks can't tap into their own sort of struggles with mental health like Arthur experiences, he can generate sympathy for how his illness robs him of having a life in our typical sense.

I am in complete agreement. The first film would've been every bit as visceral if it hadn't been set in Gotham with little nods here and there.

The comic book fanboys that can only view these two movies in relation to other superhero movies and not in isolation will be disappointed again. People who are sick of the prequel/sequel/universe comic movies will be able to enjoy it. I don't care if this Joker ever tangles with Batman or Robin or starts a series of 10 movies. Do something original and entertain me for 1.5 hours like the first one did.
