This is because their intelligence creates superior perception to be able to assess competency more clearly. This is why DKE comes into play, because they're not able to properly ascertain expected competency as well as judging their own competency.

The problem with OP is that this is likely not the imposter syndrome above, but that's what the support staff of the incompetent have spun it as.

The people who "get in over their head" were likely promoted past their competency, which is the Peter Principle.
