Happens in rural areas too, especially where people have camps that are unoccupied for long periods of time.
Another thing that happens is illegal cutting of timber where land has an absentee owner

Happened to my great aunt in Mississippi. She (in her 80s) was tipped off to timber theft on her land. She has a timber cruiser estimate the value of what was stolen, invited the thief to her house, and presented him with a bill.
