The nuclear family has destroyed the nuclear family. Until about 1950, the norm for human societies was to live in "family pods" - with uncles and cousins and grandparents and multi-generations sharing the burden.

The mid-century abrupt change in format - insisting on completely separable "nuclear" families was a terrible decision. It places far too much burden on adults (particularly the males/fathers) and isolated people.

Back in the day, if a breadwinning father lost his job or came on hard times, the pod moved in to support and help him get through the hard period. Now, he's on an island - expected to be everything to an increasingly demanding spouse.

Divorce was lower back in the day because the pressure was much lower.
